Shall We Dance?

Amongst the fancy looking crowd who wore silk dresses and dark suits, she sat alone. She too was a part of the grandeur business ball, yet she felt out of place. She was a young woman who is simply not interested about the stock market or another huge business plan. She sat alone, conversing with no one. She caught the eyes of many fine young men yet no one appealed her.

She let out a bored sigh; she didn’t want to be part this in the first place.

She finally found the courage to stand up and at least head to the table where the fancy refreshments are laid. A waiter then held out a tray of pre-poured punch. She reached for a glass, not knowing another hand was reaching for the very same one.

She just snapped back to reality when her finger touched—

“Are you—“ an unusually familiar voice spoke up.

She looked up as the warm eyes met hers. She then scanned the countenance in front of her.

“Ah—it’s you!” she exclaimed, her eyes brightened because of recognition.

“What are you doing here?” Both asked each other in unison. Then they both let out a laugh, shooing off the boring atmosphere that haunted her awhile ago.

College—she saw him walk around the very same hallway she treads on and she also had a couple of same classes that she has. He was a person whom she knew by face and by name and nothing more.

“I got dragged,” he explained, “I bet you’re surprised seeing me here.”

She nodded. She was. He was someone who was unusually part of something, someone who talks to everyone and about anything. She could consider him a social butterfly, but in a formal ball? No.

“Yeah.”

“I knew it.” He let out a shy-looking smile that caught her off guard and made her heart jump a little.

She thought for a moment, “Hey, shall we dance?”

“What?”

“It’s a ball isn’t it?” She grinned, “I was bored half to death earlier, so let’s go!”

She grabbed his hand as he stumbled along with her, his hand on hers, towards the dance floor.

Her eyes grew wide as he swept her off her feet, her eyes focused in his own. She could feel herself being led by him, his steps were strong yet…graceful. She found herself trying to catch up to him.

“Relax,” He whispered, “Follow the rhythm and just enjoy. I’ll guide you.”

All she could do was nod.

She never felt so calm in someone’s steps before.
